ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines the historical, contemporaneous, and even future language, practices, and outcomes. It explores the most salient research frameworks and methods of research into language and media. The book looks at the interplay of language and media from the media side, and focuses on auditory media, visual media and on surveillant media as an example of what is emerging. It explains linguistic modes and graphic modes as well as their combination, and future, modes in media environments. The book addresses a different linguistic arena, influencing and influenced by media: language policy making; language and gender; minority languages; multilingualism; translation; language change; and quotation practice as a case of language at work. It also focuses on socially relevant practices in the interplay of language and media – and on the significance of their investigation.
