ABSTRACT

In Figure 36.1, A, an illiterate herder living in the desert region of Central Mali, shows a short lm on his son’s smartphone of the arrival of the Tuareg liberation movement (MNLA) in Boni. It is 2012 and Northern Mali is at war. The region where A lives was occupied by the MNLA and later, the same year, by a Jihadist movement MUJAO. It is a mediated war (de Bruijn et al. 2015). We are observing profound changes in the experience of war and conict in West and Central Africa.
