ABSTRACT
We first outline how we envisage the relationship between design and ethnography emerging through our work, as a critical response to debates about the use of ethnography in the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) field, and how we are inspired by design anthropology, speculative design, and participatory design that points a way forward. Next, we detail how Design+Ethnography+Futures develops approaches that are sensitive to how incremental changes to our self-awareness and socio-material relationship can be initiated, catalyzed, scaffolded, and imagined together. We share critical reflections of these early initiatives and describe the implications these have for digital ethnography. Rather than offering a “how to” guide, we propose considerations, questions, and disruptive strategies to navigate emergent and contested futures.
