ABSTRACT
To the extent that nature constitutes a system’s environment, assessment of the material flows between the system and its environment is of immediate environmental relevance, as the inputs and outputs are, respectively, outputs from and inputs to the natural environment. Both of these kinds of flow influence the structure, quality, and functioning of the natural environment.
