ABSTRACT

Sabox is a company that specializes in the design and manufacture of corrugated-cardboard packaging. The main offices and the production plant are 30 km south of Naples, Italy. In 2008, Sabox mainstreamed sustainability and social responsibility into the core of its operating business, adopting the GreenProject, a sustainability programme aiming to reduce product and manufacturing environmental impact and CO2 emissions; Sabox was the first in Italy to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard in 2011. Refocusing R&D efforts into finding greener solutions, an entire range of ecopackaging, GreenBoxX®, was developed: it is made of recycled paper from the local differentiated waste collection and is processed by very close manufacturing plants. GreenBoxX® features high physical and mechanical performance, is lighter and easier for shipping, has a lower impact on the environment, being manufactured using water-based inks, and uses plasticizer-free glues. Having carried out a product’s life cycle assessment (LCA), Sabox has specific data about the carbon footprint related to its packaging life cycle. Bearing an EPD, Sabox (n.d.) communicates certified data for its product’s carbon footprint, along with its commitment to reducing it: in this way, clients can be provided with detailed figures about the packaging’s environmental impact, which thus integrates customers’ sustainability plans and positively differentiates from competitors.
