ABSTRACT

Most environmental footprint studies are carried out at national level. Also many process LCAs and environmental databases present national averages. However, the regional perspective is important when regional differences in the economic structure of a country exist and when diverging technology and energy mixes are used. Belgium is such a case, where regional variation in the economic structure (production) occurs, and where regional differences in income level (consumption) can be found. Furthermore, the Belgian regions are responsible for most environmental policies, and the decision-making often takes place at the regional level.
