ABSTRACT

This chapter pays a deliberate attention to the antecedents that helps to explain the willingness to follow and appropriates German traditions on economic and policy issues, in opposition to cosmopolitan political economy. The process of diffusion and influence of the German Historical School (GHS) in Portugal is similar to the occurrence with every other school or current of thought that acknowledge, assimilate and appropriate by Portuguese economists and publicists in different historical moments. This is due to a pervasive eclectic attitude regarding the so-called moral, political sciences and the commitment to any new doctrine which is a rule limited, biased and institutionally inconsequent. The spreading facilitates by the strong influence of the German tradition in the fields of law, history, philosophy and the sciences of administration. Portuguese economists pick up from the GHS useful bits and pieces that accommodate into a global vision of both the functioning and the improvement of economic life.
