ABSTRACT

The inception of this chapter, and the book that it forms a part of, occurred between discussions about lectures, marking dissertations and mugs of coffee, as David and I peered at each other over the tops of our computer screens at work. We discussed the need for a book that melded the theory and practice of play therapy with issues that, so far, had not featured much in the general literature in the field. That was fine. I enthusiastically threw ideas out and even ventured to suggest a subject area that I thought I could write about – one that I knew well, having experienced it so viscerally over many years … self-doubt, a critical inner voice, feeling incompetent.
