ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the intrinsic connections between two most significant issues the land contamination and food safety crisis faced by China. The increasing amount of contaminated land has been identified as the main contributor to the ongoing food safety crisis in China. Based on a consensus that land contamination is one of the major contributors to food contamination. The chapter argues that proper systems to improve the quality of arable lands and food in China should be incorporated into the contaminated land legislation at a national level. It briefly reviews the current scale, causes, and impacts of soil contamination in China; then. The chapter discusses how contamination laws can be used to improve the food safety situation in China; and, finally, the recommendation of several regimes that should be considered by Chinese environmental legislatures and policymakers, based on a comparative study to world approaches with regard to contaminated land management is made.
