ABSTRACT

Media attention has thrust a variety of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues out of the closet and into the homes of millions of people. Meezan and Martin's (2012a) work provides an excellent overview of the current themes and brings together a highly qualified group of social work researchers to discuss research with LGBT populations. Naturalistic inquiry, which is the rigorous observation of phenomena that are important to social work practice, is particularly useful in cases where there has been limited conceptualization of an empirical nature. Although the professional literature has begun to address these areas, as professionals we also must focus on the issue of self-awareness. The client within the individual, couple, family, community, or organizational system, and the environmental context within which they live, provide a great deal of information that is specific to the case and that can guide practice.
