ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a review of the current literature on the state of group work practice with individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT). It highlights relevant issues in conducting group work with the LGBT population. The chapter surveys the literature on what types of groups and what types of specific issues may be important in conducting groups. The literature continues to pay sparse attention to group work specific to bisexual, transgender, and questioning individuals. Since G. Getzel wrote about group work with lesbians and gay men, it is heartwarming to know that more research has been conducted on the character of group work and the array of issues that emerge with LGBT populations. It concludes with two case vignettes that are relevant to the LGBT population and details sample exchanges among members, including commentary about mutual aid's dynamics within the interaction.
