ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the Big Data analytics and answers the questions about responsibility, cost, transition, transparency and development. In doing so it gives an insight into the importance of this development and provides context to the issues relating to cyber risk and crime. New companies and institutions will take the lead in the use of Big Data analytics, and only a few more traditional organisations will invest in controlling their data. Cyber criminals and governments alike can steal information relevant to them, take over our identities, slow down production and shut off our cities from gas, water and electricity. Most cases detailing cyber crime in the financial sector depict short attacks on credit-card data or tax information. Finally, the chapter presents some case studies which illustrates how data analytics can work to our advantage. The cases are based on real practices in Europe but have been rewritten to guarantee the anonymity of the companies and individuals involved.
