ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a study that sheds light on the experiences of individuals or small groups seeking to be a part of STEM; examining their own experiences and identities with STEM; making STEM more accessible for others; and rethinking the nature and purpose of STEM. "STEM" the acronym that represents the interrelated provinces of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, is so ubiquitous in the field of Education that it can be surprising to learn the term was crafted less than 20 years ago. Qualitative research can help illuminate the ways people contend with these issues, putting a personal face on the larger issues of equity, access, and innovation. Qualitative inquiry's reliance on small numbers of research participants is likely correlated with this lesser impact. However, this kind of qualitative research can be very effective in illuminating the human component of STEM education and professions.
