ABSTRACT
Baban 八板 (‘Eight beat’) is surely the most widespread qupai in China. With both clearly delineated phrases and distinctive melodic characteristics, it is known by this name in most regions and has served as a model for uncountable numbers of instrumental pieces known by other names.
