ABSTRACT

This essay looks at trust from ethical, theological, and theatrical perspectives in order to show how trust and the breaking of trust unfolds as a theme worthy of philosophical reflection in Shakespeare’s plays (focus: Macbeth) and as a condition for theatrical work, which requires trust among members of the company and between the actors and the audience. Drawing on writings by Ulrich Beck (Risk Society) and Niklas Luhmann ( Trust and Power ), the essay addresses trust as both an interpersonal virtue and as an organizational and political principle.
