ABSTRACT

The origins of the myth date back to the beginning of Greek history. In fact, Aristarchus confirms that Homer was already familiar with the story of the Argonauts, and the very earliest texts refer to it. Phineus told Harpies how to reach the Golden Fleece and how to gain possession of it. The Golden Fleece represents first and foremost what is usually inaccessible to men. The trials imposed on Jason are the subject of book III while, in book IV, Jason captures the Golden Fleece and makes the return journey. Die Argonauten tells the story of Jason's expedition to bring the Golden Fleece back to Greece. Jason is exiled and, as he leaves, Medea shows him the Golden Fleece which she is going to return to the Temple of Delphi. The Fleece is an evil talisman which has always brought misfortune.
