ABSTRACT

The Italian terroristic events are confused with the darkest events of recent Italian political life, from mafia crimes to covert operations ruled by local and foreign secret services. In a reconstruction made by M. A. Ledeen there are references to the first-hand testimonies of very important eastern defectors about Soviet and Bulgarian involvement in Italian terrorism; he also exhibits other first-hand evidence of Soviet assistance to terrorists in Europe. The Americans have the Islamic states nightmare of a victorious communist revolution in Mexico, with the difference that Europe's nightmare could become reality quite soon. Terrorism became unbearable when it started to strike at 'the heart of the State', with which the politicians identified themselves. The antithesis in the CIA was very clear and hard between those who were inclined to continue using unorthodox methods as in the past, and those who preferred to stay within stricter moral and legal limits.
