ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview with Arjan van der Meij and he describes that difference Learning Power has made to his teaching life. But not only has this school, The Poplar, been the breeding ground of the Dutch Maker Education Movement, it has also become the starting point of Learning Power, a nationwide reform project that attempts to put teachers in the lead. Per-Ivar applied for a Dutch innovation fund called the Education Pioneers and got a small donation to start a group for kids to invent and construct their own designs. It was fantastic: all the kids were working on their own project. Being a Maker Educator is not easy, it requires a certain type of skill. And at the same time, it seemed, all across the globe teachers were starting to experiment with Maker Education, especially in the USA. But what is so special about Maker Education is that students actually invent things.
