ABSTRACT

Publisher Artiom Soloveychik is using a shared resource model to create the space for teachers to interact and reflect on their pedagogical practice. Teachers' views shifted gradually from authoritarian to more child-centered forms of pedagogy. Everyone thinks that the essence of pedagogy is in psychology, but it is not. The essence of pedagogy is in ethics. Artiom Soloveychik was also an activist for humanist education. He co-founded a magazine on humanist pedagogy during the communist era, Novoe vremya, but it had to close down when the government realized that it could be dangerous. The government introduced standardized testing in 2002. Bureaucracy has flourished since then and schools are under pressure to get results. The principals especially are under a lot of pressure. There is less and less space for them to maneuver. That is reflected in classroom practice: a more authoritarian form of teaching is on the rise.
