ABSTRACT

Two things have changed this thinking for Matt Esterman. One is Twitter and the other is TeachMeet. Twitter is one of those funny technologies that is now being used for purposes probably unintended by the creators. Far from it being a hub of educational discourse when he first found out about Twitter, it was being accused of allowing many random people to talk about their favourite cupcakes. A telling sign of the usefulness of Twitter is that key institutions such as the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (ATISL), which is currently chaired by Professor John Hattie, are highly active on Twitter and other social media, connecting teachers and the wider community with the policies, practices and vision of the education community on a national and international scale. A TeachMeet is an event hosted by an educator, where people who gather are not just participants but also presenters.
