The theory of rewriting proposed by Andre Lefevere draws on systemic descriptive approaches and treats translation as a discursive activity embedded within a system of literary conventions and a network of institutions and social agents. atronage can be understood as the powers, be they persons or institutions such as publishing houses, which can further or hinder the reading, writing or rewriting of literature and are usually more concerned with the ideology of literature than its poetics. An obvious weakness in Lefevere’s model is its inherent combination of rigidity and vagueness, the caveat of attempting to produce a simple explanation of how culture works. Lefevere passed away before he had the chance to address some of these criticisms. The idea of layered textual dynamics has enabled both an inward and outward migration of ideas in translation studies. Scholars in adaptation studies and world literature quote Lefevere when describing multifarious forms and non-linear paths in cultural exchanges.
