ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book draws together various approaches to health and wellbeing from a play perspective. It is written as a contribution to the growing awareness of the value of play in all aspects of our lives. The complexities and expectations of modern life leave us with little time, energy or inclination for rest and recreation for PLAY. PLAY is an effective, low-cost, low-impact option for improving the health and wellbeing of the international community. Advancements in medical science, unimaginable even a few decades ago, have raised the demands and expectations of our health services at a time when global fiscal austerity means that these expectations cannot always or easily be met. Whilst originally conceived for the healthcare professions, the book offers a much broader perspective which will appeal to a wide readership.
