ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Aspire National Training Centre (ANTC) which was originally set up to offer rehabilitation facilities for people who had suffered spinal cord injuries. The ANTC is the first fully-accessible training center in Europe for disabled and non-disabled people and play-based activities and techniques are an integral part of the program offered to all members of the center. The chapter also explores how innovative practice in this area is being shared from an international perspective. Aspire Leisure Centre is one of the few fully-accessible leisure centers worldwide. Aspire shares its knowledge and expertise internationally to help other centers increase access to their facilities and to show that there are sound business opportunities for doing this. Aspire operates as a registered charity providing support for people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injury. The atmosphere of acceptance and inclusivity at the Aspire Leisure Centre also helps users to nurture their emotional health and mental wellness.
