ABSTRACT

Family has always meant different things to different people and never more so than in the possibility-rich twenty-first century. Derived from the Latin familia, meaning household, it suggests domestic familiarity with associated implications of closeness and connection. Perhaps the single universal truth of family life is that it is about relationships about how they are created and maintained throughout the lifespan. Family life whatever shape it takes also inevitably involves processes of adjustment and change. Family systems theory and research from the field of neuroscience come together in their recognition that the connections or relationships between people can be understood and influenced by the patterns of communication that are developed and maintained in a type of feedback loop. A healthy society is one in which all of its members have equal access to the personal knowledge and skills necessary for the attainment of a positive state of health and wellbeing.
