ABSTRACT

This chapter examines current lifestyle concerns arising from the increasingly sedentary patterns of behavior which have led to chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and coronary heart disease. Concerns relating to sexual health across the age range are explored, along with substance abuse and the increasing problem of alcohol consumption. A health professional will refer a patient to an appropriately qualified fitness professional who will assess and plan a personalized program of physical exercise. There are many opportunities for people of all ages to participate in play-based activities as a means of relaxation, with the potential for a secondary positive impact on both mental and physical health. The health and wellbeing needs specific to men are not well recognized within the community, and men themselves are less likely to recognize the detrimental effects of social isolation. The chapter explores a variety of play and recreational activities that can help to develop, maintain or recover health and wellbeing.
