ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the concepts of engineering management for radio and television broadcast stations, and discusses the relationship the broadcast engineer has with other members of the station management team. Chief engineers work alongside the general manager, program director, news director, promotions manager, and sales manager to meet the missions of the station. Communicating with employees is a major responsibility for chief engineers. Engineers need to understand that commercial broadcast stations are unlike most other businesses, in that they operate in at least five different business areas: news, information, education, entertainment and advertising. There is a difference between management and leadership, and many engineers tend to be better managers than leaders. The chapter also discusses the functions of planning, leading, organizing, and controlling, the duties that go with them, and some of the qualities that lead to success. Hiring and training are extremely important, but motivating engineering staff is equally important.
