ABSTRACT

This chapter describes new technologies to television that enable a more immersive viewing experience. While early emphasis of Ultra-High-Definition was on the greater spatial resolution of the display, other enhancements to improve the viewing experience have since been increasing in importance. The impact of higher frame rates on the overall viewing experience is highly content dependent; however, higher frame rates can reduce temporal problems. All direct-to-consumer TV production and transmission/delivery today represent digital data values with 8-bit precision (sample bit depth). This results in a maximum of 28 or 256 levels for both luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color). High dynamic range video is arguably the most important new development for television. The electro-optical transfer function describes how to convert different coded levels of information (either analog voltage levels or digital numbers) into visible light, such as how a TV renders and displays its luminance output levels.
