ABSTRACT

This chapter allows the reader to identify and understand the function of various components that comprise a passive radio frequency (RF) system found in a television transmission facility. Almost all switches use a motor-driven linear or rotary actuator to move the mechanical contacts that are in the RF portion of the switch. Phase shifters are a basic building block for what is known as a switchless combiner. The chapter examines the processes and procedures of installation, maintenance and management of TV combiner systems at shared tower sites. Channel combiners are used to combine the power from multiple transmitters, each on its own channel, onto a common transmission line. Bandpass filters are found with almost all television transmitters. The chapter describes what is known at the time of writing about Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC 3.0) and its impact on RF components.
