ABSTRACT
The Collier Memorial, built to memorialize the MIT police officer killed during the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013, assembles 33 blocks of solid granite to form a shallow vaulted structure that translates force vectors into geometric form. The memorial’s solidity, irregular geometry, and compression-only logic conspire to produce a structure that is highly expressive of its materiality, geometry, and structural disposition.
