ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on an artist was an on-going research project pertaining to the work of the late US artist Stuart Sherman. This included a reenactment of one of Sherman's ensemble works Stuart Sherman's Hamlet: A Portrait, first shown as part of the US Radical season at the Chelsea Theatre, London in 2010, with a second version presented as part of the Remake symposium at Arnolfini, Bristol in 2012. In both cases, the working process explored what 'new' might be possible in re-visiting past works with different performers in a contemporary context. Published in The Drama Review in 1982, this is something of a blow-by-blow account of the performance, reflecting the observation frequently made that writings about Sherman's work tend towards dry and descriptive list making. Liesbeth Jansen's text also served as an indicator of the performance's set design, formed of a complex series of moveable interlocking flats and objects.
