ABSTRACT

The monumental sculpture Three Legged Bhudda was modelled on fragments of bronze Buddha sculptures researcher encountered on a visit to Tibet in 2005. A series of their works that followed were based on such fragments. Researcher have incorporated the ash gathered from the burning of incense at Buddhist temples in Shanghai into many paintings and sculptures, including monumental Buddha sculptures. The fragments make the author think about what being human means. Sculptures such as Three Legged Buddha are so pure that they can be understood by different cultures. The idea of making artworks with ash came into being. The artworks are like mirrors. The audiences observe themselves when they watch the artworks. The Memory Door series combines images of photographs from the 1920s to the 1970s that mark historical events with wooden doors taken from traditional Chinese houses then being demolished in the Shanxi Province.
