ABSTRACT

What does an indigenous theater movement do when it realizes that it is in the middle of an epochal identity and economic transition that’s fast developing throughout the community of people it strives to depict and represent? And the movement itself is grappling with its own urgent needs for solid, visionary leadership, for funding and support to survive, and for new ideas and approaches to the many challenges at hand? That’s what the artists of the American Indian theater are up against early in 2016 as they continue to seek acceptance, relevance, stability and a future for their work while life and the world bristle with changes all around.
