ABSTRACT

Sooraya Qadir, codename Dust, is a sixteen-year-old refugee from Afghanistan. Dust’s defining superpower is the ability to turn into a living dust cloud that can blind, disorient, and attack opponents. An observant Sunni Muslim who immigrated to the United States, Dust is depicted as in, and yet not of, the Western world she now inhabits. She struggles to follow the rules of her religion while simultaneously navigating the social landscape of the secular West, which is often indifferent to, and sometimes outright hostile toward, Islam.
