ABSTRACT

A variety of conceptual and methodological issues as well as data problems are encountered in analyzing metal demand. How these difficulties are handled in a particular analysis can significantly affect the results and conclusions of that analysis. This chapter explores these issues and describes how they are treated in this volume. The first section concentrates on measures of metal demand, and the second focuses on indicators of macroeconomic activity. The third section describes the intensity of use (IU) technique, the approach used in this study. The technique is compared in the fourth section with the IU hypothesis and then, in the fifth section, with other approaches used to analyze metal demand.
