ABSTRACT
After a long period of strong and steady growth, the metal consumption of the European socialist countries belonging to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) fell considerably in the mid-1970s. After 1979, consumption completely stagnated for many metals. This chapter investigates the fundamental forces underlying this unforeseen discontinuity in demand growth.
