ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the social sciences research conducted by South African based organizations, institutions and researchers. South Africa provides an interesting case study in terms of military research given the Defence Force's rapid transformation since democratization in 1994, and expectations of the military's continued involvement in a troubled Africa. In South Africa there are a number of influential non-governmental organizations (NGO) and think tanks that focus on a broad range of security related issues. In 1996, the Institute for Defence Policy(IDP) was renamed the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and as the name depicts they broadened their focus to human security and other areas, such as governance, crime and justice, conflict prevention and risk analysis, conflict management and peace building. ACCORD is actively involved in training and education with an emphasis on developing skills in conflict analysis, conflict management and conflict resolution. The Military Academy provides university tertiary education to junior officers and is open only to military personnel.
