ABSTRACT

If the focal article ‘passes’ the first and second decision rules, the last rule is for determining the type of leadership mechanisms the article addresses variation for. We use the broad categories of ‘informal’ (e.g. leadership style, participatory decision-making, goal articulation, and resource interdependence) and ‘formal’ (e.g. organizational complexity, formalization, and centralization). This rule is not a vital one since a particular study may address both formal and informal mechanisms for coordinated problem solving. In such instances, the article is discussed in both sections of the review, albeit with different emphases.
