ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in this book. It summarises some of the main findings from the authors' original research on picture books as well as adding those from the last ten to fifteen years which have confirmed and supplemented these initial findings. The chapter provides some guidelines for those who want to carry out research on response to picturebooks, based on extensive experience with the authors' own studies and those of their students. It refers briefly to the implications for pedagogy and further research. Whether it is language or literacy skills, literary understanding or the exploration of curricular topics, it is clear that picturebooks have much to offer in terms of pedagogy. However, teachers need to be familiar with a wide range of picturebooks (and, ideally, including international examples) and have some knowledge of how they work before offering them to their pupils.
