ABSTRACT

This chapter is about food in the context of disaster risk reduction (DRR) including climate change adaptation (CCA). One of the most common forms of disaster response has been the provision of food relief to those who have suffered damage to their subsistence food productions systems or whose livelihoods have been disrupted so that they have insufficient income to purchase food. There are numerous synergies between DRR and CCA as they relate to food and in particular reducing food insecurity or food vulnerability. As many of the effects of climate change on food security will be played out through changing patterns of extreme events it follows that DRR measures will be an extremely important and appropriate response. In particular, a key set of activities include those that reduce food and livelihood vulnerability of both rural and urban communities. Such activities are likely to be challenging if the underlying (political economy) causes of vulnerability are to be addressed.
