ABSTRACT

Changing social norms is a key component in achieving prevention of violence, and the potentially important role that bystanders can play has been increasingly identified. This chapter explores different approaches to bystander training and the accumulating evidence on their effectiveness. It identifies the importance of engaging people in bystander work and focuses particularly on the potential of arts-based approaches for engagement, including a discussion of a theatre-based programme, You the Man, that is in use in the US and Australia. Findings from ongoing research in the US and Australia illustrate the value of this type of approach in diverse settings including workplaces, sporting clubs, and educational institutions at both secondary and tertiary level.
