ABSTRACT

India today is in the middle of an anthropogenic environmental and climate crisis. This chapter looks at the impact of the Anthropocene in the locality by developing a more pointillist approach to the impact of global climate and environmental change in particular locales and its impact on adivasi communities in India and their landscapes. For earth system scientists the mapping of anthropogenic change has led them to see humans as a 'geological force' transforming the earth's atmosphere and allowing them to designate the last few centuries the Anthropocene. The chapter addresses some of the questions within the context of South Asian environmental history. It focuses on the whole of southern Jharkhand with references to Odisha. The region of Odisha and Jharkhand possesses among the world's best deposits of the bauxite used in aluminium production, a process which requires the construction of dams to provide electricity.
