ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the concepts of pace and tempo have been theorized in the growing field of mobilities studies. In contrast to dominant images of speed and acceleration, many mobilities scholars have introduced notions of stillness, waiting, deceleration, and rhythm. By bringing attention to the various tempos of movement, these studies move us beyond the binary distinctions between fast/slow or mobile/immobile and instead highlight the relational qualities of pace. The chapter concludes by describing how these metaphors of slower mobilities contribute to a politics of pace.
