ABSTRACT

Reading under the bedclothes by torchlight added an illicit thrill to the learning which accrued from looking at Rosemary Napper's collection of PG-tips cards, Dandy comics, Look and Learn and frowned-upon Enid Blyton stories. She attended several mediocre schools and gratefully remember the occasional good teacher who made learning a real pleasure. The university lecturers who posed questions in their monologues, interspersed with rather good jokes, provoked knowledge which remains with me today. In Napper's learning journey, she realized that subjectivity shaped my search for learning and meaning-making. And she relished the sharp thrill of creating a new meaning, a different attitude, fresh thought, or nuance of feeling, through intermingling her subjectivity with that of others. Training is a category of education focused on the learning and development of a person in relation to a particular role.
