ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the drivers and motivations of emerging multinational enterprises (EMNEs) that have sought to establish a key element of their value chain within the European market. The literature on the internationalisation of value chains has predominantly reflected studies of MNE firms from developed economies that explore globalisation patterns in established industries. The traditional 'smile curve' representation suggests the progressive erosion of the value of production within the manufacturing value chain. A key consideration when considering EMNE internationalisation patterns is the nature of their innovation and technology investments. These technology disruptions will demand more technology-intense, tightly coupled value chains. Responses to current reshoring activities of developed country MNCs, in manufacturing production and services will provide entry points into Europe. The UK adopted open approach with respect to Huawei, resulting in significant inward investment by the EMNE, suggesting that different national financial and political priorities can influence these relationships.
