ABSTRACT

Broeder Dieleman's expression of a new regionalism is evident in his use of local dialect, the incorporation of biblical references and the visualization of Zealandic scenery—churches, farming, the polder landscapes, the sea. In 2012 the Belgian filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen delivered his fourth movie The Broken Circle Breakdown, the scenario of which was based on an original Belgian theatre play. After the release of the original soundtrack, Bjorn Eriksson took The Broken Circle Bluegrass Band on tour. "To use the vernacular in folk music was a statement of sorts by Van de Velde. The phenomenon of fans-turned entrepreneurs is illustrated by two important hubs of homemade indie-folk music: Excelsior and Snow star. While digitization has lowered the barrier to self-produce music and to self-organize events and festivals, a new field of indie-folk constituted itself out of musician- and fan-based practices.
