ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ethical significance of the language (and especially metaphors) used by environmental scientists. It argues that this language has significant implications, so it warrants careful consideration by ecolinguists and other scholars. In particular, this language can help (or impede) the path of society towards sustainability. The chapter considers several ethical dimensions of scientific language about the environment in the context of recurring discussions about realism and constructivism, science and society, and advocacy. It concludes by suggesting future directions for both research and practice.
