ABSTRACT

In a recent holiday catalog distributed by the LDS Church–owned Deseret Book, readers may find an advertisement for Capture: A Book of Mormon Game and also, the Book of Mormon Floor Puzzle, advertised opposite a video game called Helam: A Stripling Warrior Quest. It is rated E for Everyone, the battles with “mysterious creatures … wicked Lamanites,” your “journey to find the villain who burned down your village” being accomplished, free of blood-spilling, head-severing action. Helam also gives you access to Heroes of the Book of Mormon App, a “fun way” to learn about “the people in the Book of Mormon.” Where did Mormons get these biographies of heroic men, dressed in generically Hebrew-Mesoamerican robes covering bulging muscles and brown skin, now walking across monitors and smartphones and through our imaginations?
