ABSTRACT

The archaeo-astronomer Anthony F. Aveni concludes his contribution to the reproduction of the Mesoamerican indigenous painting known as Mapa de Cuauhtinchan núm. 2 (MC2), ca. 1544 and collection of essays edited by David Carrasco and Scott Sessions in Cave, City, and Eagle’s Nest with following questions: “Was the MC2 a historical tale framed in a teaching text included for the novice shaman; was it a portable landscape intended to accompany the pilgrim; was it a legal document involved in the prosecution of a court case; or was it something beyond our collective imagination?” (Aveni 2007: 156).
