ABSTRACT

This chapter recreates the shared and personal nature of the conversation for Barbara, and as such will use the first-person pronoun to represent Barbara's views and experiences as she reflects on her progression. It reflects her learning about the significance of emotion and emotional safety as she journeyed from facilitating personal and professional development (PPD) in training groups to supervising mature and experienced therapists. A sense of emotional safety is needed in PPD group work because you are asking people to reflect on and think about their attachment histories. The genogram can track the social/emotional history of the family of origin and current family and/or can focus on the culture of origin genogram. Rodolfo de Bernart's work in Florence with photographs and images has been influential for me, so, for example, in presenting their genogram to the PPD group, group members might be encouraged to bring in images and photographs of themselves and their relatives.
