ABSTRACT

Manufacturing has created wealth and happiness in a massive way and has been responsible for achieving a global improvement in the quality of human life. This chapter provides a targeted view of the manufacturing sector, focusing massively produced consumable goods such as chemicals, consumer packaged goods (CPGs), automobiles, industrial machinery/components, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and the sector's relationship with Production and Operations Management (POM), which inevitably involves discussing technology. Indeed, the influence of POM over manufacturing is largely through its mastery and command of technology. The chapter also discusses the role of technological innovation in manufacturing, istribution, and logistics, as well as how POM orchestrates technologies in improving and transforming the manufacturing sector. It outlines practical problems in operations management (PPOMs) in the manufacturing sector, which helps to trace POM in the evolution of the manufacturing sector.
